Staff
36. A very fine South African staff from around 1900. Several carvings from this carver and the “school of” survive sometimes referred to as “round mouth” offered here is a particularly well executed example. The hair is beautifully done. There are some ‘tally’ marks to the one end of this staff, not something commonly found on South African items, it may indicate feasts or battles or other important events recorded.
125cm long.
Ex Jonathan Hope, ex U.K. collection.
