These masks are regarded as sacred and are integral and used in various ceremonies and rituals. Each mask carries a distinct name and significance, which is handed down through generations. The crest masks play a role not only in religious and cultural rituals but also in social and political events. The cruciform central design reflects the way the Senufo people merge Christian and traditional beliefs.
