48. A South African shamans bag and contents. The leather bag is of European manufacture but has been embellished (empowered) with beadwork and wirework. The contents include pre-prepared packets of medicine which are still intact, small bottles one with contents. Divination objects, these would be thrown and read to diagnose the patient and prescribe the correct medicine. There is also an early albumen print inscribed on the back “crossing Umuti River on the way to beach Arena?” 2-1-69. There are some loose pieces of newspaper (not photographed) dated 1906.
