N.W.C. Club
48. A very interesting club/sceptre with a janiform head the shaft formed as a naturalistic leg. There is lots of painted detail that has heavily oxidised over time and a cavity in the head that looks as if it once had something inserted, maybe a metal spike? The basic form is common along the north West Coast most of these have been described in museum collections as fishing clubs. There is a large age crack to one cheek and a patch on one side of the face where it appears to have been sitting somewhere damp for a while. I would guess this is at least mid 19th century. It came from the deceased estate of an old antique dealer and horder.
