Group.
209. An interesting group of objects. My feeling is that they are from somewhere In South America but I am not sure? the old label on the paddle reads “Canoe Paddle From Pubra? Tonga Isle South Sea Islands” the decoration on the blade reminds me some Suriname decorated objects. The woven leather may point to Brazil? 19th century. Another pertinent suggestion is Gran Chaco?
A related spear pictured here from the Museum Ulm has the following description. “The spear comes probably from North America and was donated to the Gewerbemuseum (Museum of Applied Arts) Ulm in 1919 by Karl Kärcher (1882 – 1968). Kärcher was teacher of industrial arts in Ulm (1908 – 1918) and from 1918 on director of the industrial school in Bad Cannstatt. From where and when he obtained the object is not clarified”
The paddle is 130cm long.
