Akan Drum

A large Akan Drum C1930. Drums like this were used by Ompe and Ntan music and dance clubs, which were popular in the 1930s and 1940s although some examples of breasted drums were collected in the 19th century. An Akan drum in the British Museum is indeed the oldest provenanced piece of African art in its collections.
