Dogon Stone

123. A rare ceremonial grinding stone. Crusty patina. For a similar example see the catalogue ‘New acuisitions in the Wunderman collection 1974’ illustration 003. According to Hans Guggenheim, these were used in rain-making ceremonies and in grinding cola nuts. At the time of writing (1974) there was no evidence as to whether these were made by the Dogon or found items (from an older culture) re-purposed as it is suspected with the Nomoli of Sierra Leone.
