Sepik Mask

A very old mask. An interesting detail, one eye is much larger than the other, giving the mask an animated expression. There are small holes either side of the eyes for suspension of feathers or shells and traces of lime and red pigment. The rear of the mask is naturally oxidised. 19th century. This mask would have been suspended to empower an object or hung in a mans house from the pierced loop on the forehead.

22cm x 14cm x 9cm.
